Cel mai cunoscut si temut peste de aici este pestele tigru Goliat. Este un pradator feroce care poate atinge lejer o greutate de 68 kilograme. Datorita fortei sale, reusesete sa inoate in amonte, depasind obstacolele naturale si curentii puternici. Astfel, pestii tigru s-au dezvoltat si au evoluat intr-o mare varietate de specii, toate fiind cantonate in cursul de apa al Congo-ului.

Zaganul sau Vulturul Barbos (Gypaetus barbatus) Probabil cea mai maiestuoasa specie de vultur, zaganul a stapanit timp de mii de ani inaltimile si stancariile Carpatilor, insa in cele din urma rautatea si lacomia oamenilor l-au doborat definitiv. Astazi, silueta sa maiestuoasa nu mai brazdeaza cerul tarii noastre. Zaganii mai traiesc in Muntii Pirinei, Alpi, Caucaz, Pamir, Altai, Insula Creta, Tibet, Himalaya si in cateva locuri din Africa. Este o pasare imensa, ale carei aripi acopera o anvergura de 280 cm, si are greutate cuprinsa intre 5-9 kilograme. Este singura specie de pasare care se hraneste cu oase si maduva, oase carora le da drumul de la inaltime sa se sparga in bucati la contactul dur cu stancile. Romanii l-au cunoscut sub denumirile neaose de zagan, rarau si ceahlau. Conform unor lingvisti de prestigiu, acestea sunt singurele denumiri de pasari ramase nealterate din stravechea limba a dacilor. Muntii Ceahlau si Rarau si-a luat numele de la ceahlaii si raraii inaripati care isi cresteau puii intre stancile lor. Muntii Carpati reprezentau limita arealului nordic al acestei specii in Europa, acest aspect accentuand oarecum vulnerabilitatea zaganilor, fiind cunoscut ca atunci cand o specie este in regres, populatiile de limita dispar primele. Un alt argument cu privire la disparita lor din muntii nostri este legat de disparitia hoiturilor proaspete cu care se hraneau, precum si campaniile de impuscare si distrugere a zaganilor din anii 1930, respectiv 1934, cand zaganii au fost invinovatiti ca ar duce la disparitia caprelor negre din Carpati. Zaganii cuibareau din Muntii Rodnei pana in Bucegi, Ciucas, Capatanii, Fagaras, Parang si Retezat. Traiau exclusiv in zona stancariilor alpine, necoborand nici iarna sub zona padurilor de conifere. Ultimul zagan a fost impuscat in anul 1938 la Pasul Turnu Rosu, langa versantul de vest al Muntilor Cozia.

Specialistii considera ca mecanismul functioneaza similar si in cazul oamenilor: cei care au baut doar alcool si se simt obositi si ametiti au sanse mai mari sa-si dea seama ca sunt beti si sa adopte un comportament prudent. In schimb, cei carora cafeaua ingerata concomitent cu alcoolul le da o stare de vioiciune pot avea iluzia ca nu au baut mult si ca pot, prin urmare sa "functioneze" normal - de pilda, sa conduca o masina, ceea ce poate duce la situatii foarte periculoase.
